2012 CBL National Tournament
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
- Do or can players get any of the donations money? No, players, coaches, and/or teams do not get any part of the donation money that is given to the non-profit organizations for winning the championship of a tournament division.
- Can players and teams choose which non-profit organizations get donations? Yes, teams will be able to choose up to three (3) non-profit organizations that are in their community to receive a portion of the donation money for winning their tournament division. The teams will select the non-profit organizations by team vote. The team captain’s (player/team representative who registers the team online) vote is worth two votes and the other players vote is worth one vote.
- How many players can be on a team? There is a minimum of eight (8) players and a maximum of 12 players per team for the 17 and up divisions. All youth divisions (age 10 – 18) must have twelve (12) players per team.
- Why can’t players get some of the donation money? The CBL is an amateur based basketball company. If players were given any portion of the donation money they would be consider professionals and/or they would forfeit their amateur status. The CBL tournament is a charity event and players that are playing are doing so for the love of the game of basketball and for the improvement of their community by way of supporting local non-profit organizations.
- Can the non-profit organizations give money to the players? The non-profit organizations that receive donation money from the CBL national tournament “cannot, in any way,” give players any money from the donation. The non-profit organizations selected to receive the tournament donation money will have to sign a donation agreement that prohibits them from giving any player money from the donation. If they (non-profit organizations) are found in violation of the donation agreement they will have to return 100% of the donation to the CBL.
- What will happen with the donation money if some of our players don’t live in the community that the team is registered under for the CBL national tournament? 100% of the donation money will be donated to non-profit organizations in the city (city limits) that the team is registered under. Players should look to form a team or get on a team that represents their community/city if they want to make sure that their city receives the donation if they win.
- Can a non-profit organization sponsor our team and/or team registration fee? Yes, a non-profit organization can sponsor your team and/or team registration fee, but that does not guarantee that the non-profit organization will be selected by all of the players on the team to receive the donation money if they win the tournament championship.
- Can the 17 and up players play in two divisions? Yes, 17 and up players can play in two divisions (i.e. 17 and up division and the 35 and up division) as long as they meet the division’s age requirement.
- Will the games be televised on national TV? Yes, we are planning to have the national championship games televised on a national broadcast, but the games will be tape-delayed and not a live broadcast. We will announce which network we will show the division championship games on before the national tournament round of play.
- Where are the tournaments going to be? There will be six (6) tournament sites in each state. Team registrations will determine what cities we select to have the tournament sites at because we want to try and reduce the travel expenses for as many teams as possible.
- How many teams will be in my division? We are estimating three hundred (300) teams per state, which would be fifty (50) teams per tournament site for all divisions, but please understand that these are only estimation numbers and not an exact team division count.
- How will we know how many teams have registered in my division? We will update the tournament team registration numbers for each division on the CBL National Tournament webpage daily. Also, you can sign-up to be on the CBL News Alert and you will receive the information via email on a regular basis.
- Can we mail our team’s registration payment? No, because we have so many teams that will be registering to play in the national tournament we cannot accept mail-in team registrations. All team registrations “must” be done online so we can quickly and easily manage the logistics of putting on our tournaments in cities across the US.
- How can I register my team? Click on the register now tab on the CBL website and follow the registration steps. If you do not give your credit card payment information and you did not receive an automated email thanking you for registering your team, please know that you have not completely registered your team and you will not be on our national registration list. If you are sure you have registered, but your registration did not go through, you need to call the CBL Corporate Office immediately at 1-888-228-3855.
- Do or can any player get a ring? No, only the players that win their division’s championship will receive a national tournament championship ring. The rings will be presented to the players at their donation ceremony in their city.
- How will the non-profit organizations in my city know about the donation money if our team wins the tournament? The CBL will issue a press release and media alert in the city of the championship teams notifying all 501(c)3 non-profit organizations of the rules and how to apply for the donation money.
- What type of facility do you need to have to be a CBL National Tournament Site? National Tournament Site Coordinators need to secure facilities that have at least four (4) high school regulation size courts, gyms that can seat a minimum of five hundred (500) people, and a facility that will support a fifty to sixty (50 to 60) team tournament over a course of four tournament days or two weekends.
- Can semi-pro teams that pay or financially compensate their players participate in this tournament? If you are a semi-pro team that financially compensates your players you cannot participate in this tournament as a team.
